A Letter to 2024

January 15, 2024

I hope 2024 is off to a good start. To kick-off the new year, I thought it would be a good idea to write 2024 a letter. Here goes.

Dear 2024:

I am curious what you have in store this year. I am open to your suggestions, but I also have a couple of requests for your consideration.

Time: It seems I have developed a complicated relationship with time over the years. Even as I think about writing this letter, I feel like I have a set amount of time to write it, then I must quickly move on to the next task on the list. My first wish for 2024 is this: instead of being hyper-focused on productivity, can you help me prioritize connection? To always say “yes” to lunch with a friend, or a walk outside? Stuff like that.

Kindness: Can this be the year I (and all of us…) make kindness a top priority? It seems some of us might be out of practice on this one. It doesn’t have to be huge. A smile. Holding a door. A phone call. In 2024 I would like to give and receive more of that, please.

Light: Maybe because of this season of darkness, I have become increasingly aware of – and grateful for - the gift of light. I love the sunny stretches on the shorter days of winter, and the twinkle lights on my neighbor’s balcony. In 2024 can you help me to always see the light amidst the darkness? That would be super helpful.

Please write back.

Your friend,

Grace
